Tribute concert to Victor Jara is March 27 at Saint Mary’s

WINONA, Minn. — A tribute concert Thursday, March 27, at Saint Mary’s University will celebrate the life of Victor Jara, the Chilean singer-songwriter, political activist and playwright assassinated during the Chilean military coup in 1973.

On the 40th anniversary of his death, the Stearns County Pachanga Society will perform Jara’s songs, with the lyrics projected in both Spanish and English. The contrast between the themes of his songs, on love, peace and social justice — and the brutal way in which he was murdered — transformed Jara into a symbol of struggle for human rights and justice worldwide. Based in St. Cloud, the Stearns County Pachanga Society is an ever-evolving, ever-growing organic musical experiment that aims to combine the musical spirit of Cuban Cabildos, Brazilian Samba clubs, and Spanish Charangas with danceable rhythms from all over the globe.

The event, scheduled for 7:30 p.m., will be held in Figliulo Recital Hall, located in the SMU Performance Center. The public is welcome to attend, free of charge. Co-sponsors include the Department of Modern and Classical Languages, the Intercultural Awareness Association and the Student Activities Committee of Saint Mary’s.

SMU presents free concert featuring Baroque music

WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary’s University Department of Music will present “The Cuckoo and the Nightingale and other Baroque Spectaculars” at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16, at Central Lutheran Church, 259 W. Wabasha St. The event, free and open to the public, will feature the Saint Mary’s University Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. David Leung. Special guests joining Dr. Leung on violin will be Maureen Yuen, a violinist from State University of New York at Fredonia, and Erik Floan, an organist from Saint Mary’s University. The concert will include music by Handel, Bach and Corelli.

Saint Mary’s hosts free violin recital Sept. 29

Saint Mary’s University will host a free recital featuring violinst Tien-Hsin “Cindy” Wu and pianist Jiayi Shi at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 29, in Figliulo Recital Hall located in the SMU Performance Center.

Violinist Tien-Hsin “Cindy” Wu enjoys a versatile career as a soloist and a chamber musician, having performed with renowned musicians and ensembles in Europe, the United States and Asia. She has appeared as soloist with the National Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan and Taipei Symphony Orchestra in her native country, as well as with the Odessa Philharmonic Orchestra (Ukraine) and the Russian State Symphony Orchestra.

Wu’s 2010-2011 season highlights include performances on the Linton Chamber Music Series, Marlboro on Tour, Caramoor Rising Stars, as well as an invitation to Music Sharing International Community Engagement Program 2010 LAOS. In addition to performances across the globe, Wu also began teaching violin/viola this fall as an adjunct professor at the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California.

As a solo recitalist and chamber musician, Wu has performed extensively in Taiwan, Europe and North America, at such prominent venues as New York City's Alice Tully Hall, Boston's Jordan Hall, Washington D.C.’s Kennedy Center and Library of Congress, as well as in Philadelphia, Baltimore, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Vancouver.

Pianist Jiayi Shi began playing the piano at age 4. A few years later, she was accepted to the prestigious Shanghai Conservatory of Music in China and studied there until 1996, when she was granted a full scholarship to the University of Texas at Austin. Shi continued her education at the Eastman School of Music and graduated from Eastman in 2002 with both a master’s degree and a Performance Certificate in Piano. Besides completing her Doctoral of Musical Arts at Manhattan School of Music, she is currently on the piano faculty of Biola University in California. She maintains an active schedule as a chamber musician and collaborative pianist, working extensively with the internationally renowned violinist Midori.

Saint Mary’s hosts Sing It Loud, The Fast Track Sept. 25

WINONA, Minn. — On Saturday, Sept. 25, Saint Mary’s University will host a concert featuring the bands Sing It Loud and The Fast Track.

The concert will be held in SMU’s gymnasium and doors will open at 7:30 p.m. The Fast Track will play at 8 p.m. with Sing It Loud taking the stage at 9 p.m. The concert is free to SMU students and $5 for all other admission. Tickets will be available at the door.

Sing it Loud is an American pop rock band from Minneapolis. Their new album, titled “Everything Collide,” contains 11 tracks and was released in May. The album reached #28 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart.

SMU Chamber Singers to present Homecoming Concert Thursday

WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary’s University Chamber Singers will present a Homecoming Concert at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 26, at Chapel of Saint Mary of the Angels on the Saint Teresa campus.

The 24-voice select ensemble, directed by Dr. Patrick O’Shea, is currently touring Provence, France as part of their 2009 Concert Tour. Tour highlights include performances at Cercle Naval de Toulon (Vauban) and Salle Tino Rossi, Les Pennes Mirabeau. The Chamber Singers will also serve as the guest choir for Mass at the Église de Notre-Dame de l’Assomption de Lambesc.

Repertoire will include a cappella works by Nystedt, Byrd, Debussy and Stanford; English madrigals; and a world premiere of “Due Sonetti di Petrarca,” composed by Dr. O’Shea especially for this tour.

Jazz groups, Batucada joint performance is Nov. 21 at SMU

WINONA, Minn. — Saint Mary’s University jazz ensembles will join forces with the percussion ensemble Batucada Nossa Senhora for an evening of rhythmic jazz and unique ethnic sounds p.m. Friday, Nov. 21.

The joint concert, planned for 7:30 p.m. in Page Theatre, combines the talents of the 18-piece Jazz Ensemble and 12-member Batucada ensemble. The SMU Jazz Combo, featuring five student soloists, will also perform. Dr. John Paulson directs the jazz groups and Denny McGuire directs Batucada Nossa Senhora (translated as “percussion ensemble of our lady”).

The big band will feature the world premiere of Dr. Paulson’s “Drop Off Blues.” This piece stretches the boundaries of traditional blues arrangements by giving each section in the band a challenging “soli” part, as well as ample space for individual soloists. Also included in the jazz ensemble set will be a Basie-style ballad “Nice and Easy,” written and arranged by Jeff Taylor; “Carnival Del Sol,” a lively jazz samba by Dean Sorenson; Dizzy Gillespie’s famous “Manteca”; bebop trumpeter Lee Morgan's ever popular “Sidewinder”; and “Spring Cleaning” by Maynard Ferguson alumnus Matt Harris (featuring music faculty member Eric Heukeshoven on piano). Jazz Combo I will be performing A.C. Jobim’s well-known bossa nova “Triste” and Mongo Santamaria’s “Afro Blue.” The jazz groups will combine with the Batucada percussionists to ignite the rhythmic excitement of the concert’s Latin-jazz style pieces.

Student soloists in the jazz groups include: Twin Cities tenor saxophonist Ryan Ballanger; baritone saxophonist Ben Scott and trombonist Tom Briese, both from Rochester; and alto saxophonist Vanessa Grams of Little Falls.

Batucada Nossa Senhora will perform styles from the Afro-Cuban and Afro-Brazilian traditions, as well as a drum medley from Ghana in West Africa.

Reel Big Fish to headline Oct. 9 concert at Saint Mary’s

WINONA, Minn. — Reel Big Fish, a horn-driven ska punk band from California, will headline a Thursday, Oct. 9, concert at Saint Mary’s University.

Doors to the SMU gym will open at 6 p.m.; an opening band (Danger is my Middle Name) will perform at 7 p.m., and Reel Big Fish will take the stage at 8 p.m.

Reel Big Fish is best known for the 1997 hit “Sell Out.” The band gained mainstream recognition during the 1990s. In 1998, the band appeared in the movie BASEketball, performing in the stands to pump up the crowd.

Their performance at SMU connects their tours in Canada and Brazil.

Tickets are $15 for the general public. Saint Mary’s University students will be admitted for free and have the option of purchasing a $10 additional ticket. SMU faculty and staff also pay $10. World-class saxophonist to share talents with Saint Mary’s

WINONA, Minn. — Internationally recognized jazz saxophonist Marc Bernstein will travel from his home in Denmark to Saint Mary’s University March 24-26 to give a public performance and to work with members of the SMU Concert Band, as well as additional SMU music students.

On March 27 band members will get their first look at the new music Bernstein is composing for them. Bernstein was chosen from a field of international applicants to compose this year’s Kaplan Commissioning Project.

The SMU Concert Band commissioned Bernstein’s piece through the Helen and Sam Kaplan Foundation Commissioning Project. The Helen and Sam Kaplan Foundation supports performances and activities led by Jewish artists and scholars that are designed to increase cultural and religious understanding at Saint Mary’s. His visit is funded in part through the Danish government to promote artistic-educational partnership activities in the world. Bernstein is SMU’s fifth Kaplan composer.

The SMU Concert Band will present the world premiere performance of Bernstein’s piece in September, during SMU’s Inauguration/ Family Weekend.

During his visit, Bernstein, along with local and regional musicians, will present a public recital – featuring Bernstein’s original jazz compositions – at 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 25. The event, to be held at Figliulo Recital Hall, located in the SMU Performance Center, is free and open to the public.

Bernstein, born in Brooklyn, N.Y, graduated from the Berklee College of Music in 1984. Inspired great saxophonists and jazz artists, Bernstein pursued a career in music. He recorded his first CD in 1985, and was a regular performer in New York City. He began playing overseas, and gained notoriety in Denmark, where he was offered a spot with Klüvers Big Band. Bernstein relocated to Copenhagen, Denmark; he left the band in 1996 to go solo, and has since released six CDs.

Saint Mary’s Concert Band to perform on March 30

WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary’s University Concert Band will present their spring concert at 3 p.m., Sunday, March 30, in Page Theatre, located in the SMU Performance Center.

Directed by Dr. Janet Heukeshoven, the 65-member band will entertain audiences with a varied selection of Repertoire including “Sea Songs” by Vaughan Williams; “American Hymn Tune Sketches” by Prescott; “Amazing Grace,” arranged by Tichel; “Albanian Dance” by Shelly Hanson, “Geometric Dances” by Cichy; “In Heaven's Air” by Hazo; and “Africa: Ceremony, Song & Ritual” by Smith.

This concert continues the theme of “Song and Dance,” which the ensemble is using this season to explore the rich band repertoire, both new and old, which originates from the folk song or hymn traditions, as well as dance-inspired music.

Josh Gracin to headline spring concert March 13 at Saint Mary’s

WINONA, Minn. — Country music singer Josh Gracin will headline a public concert Thursday, March 13, in Saint Mary’s University’s gymnasium, located in the Toner Student Center.

Gracin’s self-titled debut album is edging in on platinum status. With the No. 1 hit “Nothin’ to Lose” and other hits, “I Want to Live” and “Stay with Me (Brass Bed),” Gracin has established himself as a leading country singer since gaining his fame from the hit reality series “American Idol,” where he finished fourth during the show’s second season. In 2003, Gracin also contributed the song “Working for the Weekend” to the Herbie: Fully Loaded soundtrack, and he also sang on “When I See an Elephant Fly” on the Jim Brickman album, The Disney Songbook. Gracin, a former U.S. Marine and Michigan native, entertains his audiences with energetic stage performances and rocking country music.

Opening for Gracin is The Roosters, a Minnesota country band whose single “Sorry Bout the Mess,” released in April 2007, has been gaining popularity on Sirius Satellite Radio.

Doors will open at 6 p.m. No food or drinks are allowed in the gymnasium. SMU’s Student Activities Committee is sponsoring the concert.

SMU Oldie Moldies to perform at Visions Feb. 1

The Oldie Moldie All-Stars from Saint Mary’s University will perform a live and lively dinner show Friday, Feb. 1, at Visions Event Center.

Rock along to your favorite ’50s, ’60s and ’70s tunes, while you enjoy a menu of garden salad, grilled 6-ounce sirloin, roasted garlic mashed potatoes, green beans and carrots, béarnaise sauce, rolls and butter, and frosted marble cake.

The Oldies are all members of the national music fraternity Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia at Saint Mary’s. The group, which has been reformed each year for three decades, consists of talented and engaging singers and band members. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and dinner will be served at 7 p.m.; the Oldies will perform two sets, one at 6:30 p.m., and a second at 7:45 p.m.

The performance —a celebration of Advent and the Nativity through sung and spoken word — will held at Chapel of Saint Mary’s of the Angels, located on the Saint Teresa campus.

Music will include some familiar carols, as well as selections by Morten, Lauridsen, Hans Leo Hassler, Gabriel Fauré, Palestrina and a variety of other composers from Renaissance to the present.

Theatre, music events highlight SMU Family Weekend Sept. 28-30

WINONA, Minn. — A full slate of events await parents and students during Saint Mary’s University’s annual Family Weekend Sept. 28-30. In addition, the public is invited to enjoy the talents of SMU students during theatre, jazz, and band and chorus events.

The weather is cooling off but the jazz is heating up at Saint Mary's. Two student groups led by Dr. John Paulson will kick off the year with a concert at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28, in the Performance Center’s Figliulo Recital Hall. Tickets are $6, $4 for students and seniors. The 18-piece Jazz Ensemble and six-piece Jazz Combo I will perform from 6 to 7 p.m., and two Jazz Workshop Combos, directed by Dr. Paulson and Eric Heukeshoven, will play for a reception following the concert in the Toner Student Center Lounge.

Jazz Combo I will start off the concert playing selections from their repertoire of recognizable jazz standards like “Stolen Moments” by Oliver Nelson. Featured soloists include Sam Courtier on guitar, Matt Clementz on trumpet and Tony Freeman on tenor sax.

The big band will perform tunes like Bryan Kid's arrangement “Sister Sadie” by Horace Silver, and “Round Midnight” by Thelonius Monk, featuring sophomore Vanessa Grams on alto sax. Also included in their set will be the recognizable “Cold Duck Time” by Eddie Harris, arranged by Mark Taylor.

The SMU Concert Band and SMU choirs will perform 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, in Page Theatre, located in the Performance Center. Tickets are $6, $4 for students and seniors. The concert band — under the direction of Dr. Janet Heukeshoven — is a 77-member ensemble made up of SMU students, as well as qualified community musicians. Rehearsing twice weekly, the band performs a wide variety of traditional and modern wind band literature. Saturday's concert will include the “National Anthem,” arranged by Bowles; Vaughan Williams’ “English Folk Song Suite;” Eric Whitacre’s “October;” and Hardiman’s “Lord of the Dance,” arranged by Saucedo. The “English Folk Song Suite” contains three movements, the march, “Seventeen Come Sunday;” the intermezzo, “My Bonnie Boy;” and the march, “Folk Songs from Somerset.”

The Saint Mary's Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, and Women's Choir will perform a number of choral works, from the Renaissance to Gospel music, and in several languages including Latin and Iroquois. The Concert Choir (65 voices) and Chamber Singers (24 voices) are directed by Dr. Patrick O’Shea, and the Women’s Choir (23 voices) is directed by faculty member Peter Schleif.

The SMU Department of Theatre Arts will stage “Art” 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28; Saturday, Sept. 29; and Monday, Oct. 1; as well as 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30. Written by Yasmina Reza, and directed by Dr. Stephen Bouler, “Art,” is a humorous and honest examination of modern friendship.

Reza demonstrates through comic relief what it means to be a friend. When an art lover buys a very expensive white painting (with white stripes), his best friend goes ballistic. A third friend enters the scene acting as a mediator. Reza humorously examines both subjects with the use of three characters: the man who bought the painting and the two friends who come to see it. Tickets for the performance — to be held in Page Theatre — are $8, $6 for students and seniors. The audience should be advised that “Art” contains strong language.

WINONA, Minn. — The public is invited to join Saint Mary’s University for Rockin’ for Relief — a live concert to benefit flood victims in our surrounding communities. The event, which will include barbecued food, kids games and a live auction, will begin at 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, in Saint Mary’s plaza.

Performing will be Bookreader, an SMU student band; SMU’s Adam Stasica; Winonan Mike Munson; and Monday Saga, a band from Milwaukee in which SMU alum Brandon Mathieus performs.

Big-ticket auction items will include a Wenonah Canoe, Twins Tickets, a Watkins basket, and Saint Paul Saints merchandise. Any local businesses wishing to donate to the live auction should contact Katie LaPlant (507) 457-6936.

First Page Series performance, Pavlo, on stage Sept. 14 at SMU

WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary’s University Page Series heats up for the 2008 season with the exciting and passionate Mediterranean-style music of Pavlo Friday, Sept. 14. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. in Page Theatre, located in the SMU Performance Center.

Pavlo expresses his influences — flamenco, Latin and classical — through his use of guitars, drums, the Greek bouzouki, and vocals. His musical style combines his childhood studies of flamenco and Latin guitar with his love for Greek and European music —combining for “the ultimate Mediterranean experience.” Pavlo’s fiery enthusiasm is contagious; audience members will be dancing in their seats.

His unique sound and high-energy concerts have earned him an international reputation as one of today’s great performers.

WINONA, Minn. — Season subscriptions to the 2007-2008 Saint Mary’s University Page Series and Department of Theatre Arts seasons go on sale Tuesday, May 29, at the Performance Center box office.

Season subscribers must choose at least three events to the Page Series and all four Department of Theatre Arts events to:

• Select the best seats in the house;
• Receive ticket exchange privileges; and
• Save 10 percent on their order.
• Returning 06-07 subscribers save 20 percent on their order.

The Page Series will offer 10 music, dance and family theatre events from September 2007 through April 2008. Dance concerts feature a best-of program from MOMIX, swing and jazz dance with Koresh Dance Co., and Saint Petersburg Ballet Theatre in “Carmen.” Music concerts feature the guitar-driven Mediterranean sound of Pavlo; Madrigaia, an eight-woman ensemble that sings music from around the world (in 13 languages); the American-Japanese fusion of San Jose Taiko; and two SMU voice faculty members in concert. Family theatre includes two Theatreworks USA productions, “Charlotte’s Web” and “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day,” and the giant puppet theatre company Theatre Sans Fil in the children’s opera “Hansel and Gretel.”

The Department of Theatre Arts offers classic and contemporary drama with “Art” by Yasmina Reza, “Yerma” by Federico Garcia Lorca, “Iphigenia at Aulis” by Euripides, and “When You Comin’ Back Red Ryder?” by Mark Medoff.

Cartel to headline spring Concert March 8 at SMU

WINONA, Minn. — The rising pop punk band Cartel from Atlanta, Ga., will headline a public concert Thursday, March 8, at Saint Mary’s University.

More than 3,000 copies of “Chroma,” Cartel’s debut album, were sold in the first week of its release in 2005, earning the band a spot on Alternative Press’s 2005 list of “Bands You Need to Know.” In March, the band signed with Epic records and was also named Yahoo! Music’s winner in the “Who’s Next” competition. Cartel’s music has been used on MTV’s “Laguna Beach: The Real O.C.” Band members are Will Pugh, vocals, guitar, piano; Joseph Pepper, guitar; Nic Hudson, guitar; Jeff Lett, bass; and Kevin Sanders, drums. The group is currently on a nationwide tour that started in February and will continue into April.

Cartel’s three opening bands are New Atlantic, Boys Like Girls, and Cobra Starship. Music from Cobra Starship was recently featured in the movie “Snakes on a Plane.”

The concert, hosted by SMU’s Student Activities Committee, will be held in the gymnasium. Doors will open at 6 p.m. New Atlantic performs at 7:15 pm., Boys Like Girls at 8 p.m., Cobra Starship at 8:45 p.m., and Cartel at 9:30 p.m.

Tickets are $15 for the general public and are available at the Performance Center box office, (507) 457-1715, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays.

SMU Chamber Singers to perform in Germany, Oshkosh

WINONA, Minn. - The Saint Mary's University Chamber Singers will perform in Oshkosh, Wis., and in Germany as part of their 2007 Concert Tour. The 24-voice select ensemble is directed by Dr. Patrick M. O'Shea, associate professor of music and Music Department Chairman.

Tour performances will include concerts at:

• Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Oshkosh, Wis. - 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 11;
• Johanneskirche, Zolling, Bavaria - 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 16;
• Laurentiuskirche, Haag am der Amper, Bavaria - 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17.

The Chamber Singers will also serve as guest choir for a Mass at the Liebfrauen Münster, Ingolstadt, Bavaria, at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 18.

All performances are free and open to the public. Repertoire will include a cappella works by Victoria, Arcadelt, Marenzio, Woollen, Guerrero, and a world premiere of “Drei Rilkegesänge,” composed by Dr. O'Shea especially for this tour.
