SMU to host two volleyball camps

WINONA, Minn. — Saint Mary’s University will host two girls’ volleyball camps July 20-31 for students entering grades six through 12 in the fall.



This first camp, “Session I,” is for girls entering grades six through eight and will be held Sunday, July 20, through Thursday, July 24. The second camp, “Session II,” is for girls entering grades nine through 12 and will be held Sunday, July 27, through Thursday, July 31.



These camps provide a great experience for players who want intense work in a competitive atmosphere. Seventy-five percent of the focus will be on individual skills, and the other 25 percent will be on team play. Mike Lester, SMU’s head volleyball coach, will lead this camp with the assistance of SMU women’s volleyball team members.



For commuters, rates are $375 before April 15 and $400 after April 15. Residential rates are $425 and $450. Register and pay online at www.smumn.edu/camps by June 27. Saint Mary’s basketball team invites community to bring toys for Gifts for Winona program

WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary’s University’s women’s basketball team is partnering with the Saint Mary’s University Gifts for Winona program to collect toys on Saturday, Dec. 7. On Dec. 7, the women’s team will play the College of Saint Benedict at 3 p.m. in the SMU Gym. Attendees are encouraged to bring along a variety of new toys for girls and boys, which will be wrapped and distributed through Gifts for Winona. The Saint Mary’s University Gifts for Winona program, now in its 12th year, helps more than 1,600 people in the Winona area have happier holidays.

SMU Cardinals hosting fourth Toys For Tots Teddy Bear Toss

WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary’s University men’s hockey team will hold the fourth annual Toys For Tots Teddy Bear Toss Friday, Nov. 22, during the Cardinals’ 7:30 p.m. home game against Saint John’s at the SMU Ice Arena.

Fans attending are encouraged to bring a teddy bear or stuffed animal — preferably new, but those in good used condition will also be accepted and appreciated. Teddy bears will also be available at the arena for a donation of $1.

After the first SMU goal in the first period — or at the end of the first period — fans will have an opportunity to throw their teddy bears and/or stuffed animals onto the ice. They will then be collected and distributed to children in the Winona area for the holidays.

The men’s hockey team will also have a collection bin in the SMU Ice Arena lobby for anyone wishing to donate a toy other than a teddy bear for Toys For Tots.

The U.S. Marine Corps Toys For Tots Foundation was formed to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year and then distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in their local communities. The program is aimed at helping needy children throughout the United States of America experience the joy of Christmas along with the message of hope to these under-privileged children to motivate them into being responsible, productive, patriotic citizens and community leaders.

Public invited to play in Saint Mary’s Tom Farren Memorial Golf Classic

WINONA, Minn. — The public is invited to play in Saint Mary's University’s fifth annual Tom Farren Memorial Golf Classic Sunday, July 21. The four-person scramble will have a 9 a.m. shotgun start at Cedar Valley Golf Course. The $80 entry fee includes a Sunday brunch from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m., a Saint Mary’s pullover jacket and 18 holes of golf with a cart.  The deadline to register is Monday, July 8.

This outing honors former SMU Golf Coach Tom Farren and is a fundraiser for the men’s and women’s golf teams.

Raffle prizes are available. Team prizes will include: first place — four FootJoy shirts; fifth place — four Greg Norman shirts; 10th place — four Cutter & Buck shirts; second-to-last place — Twins pint glass and sleeve of balls; and last place — Twins pint glass and sleeve of balls. Games will include closest to pin (holes 4, 8, 11 and 15), long drive (holes 1 and 10), longest putt (holes 9 and 13) and closest to pin in two shots (a team prize on hole 18). Get set to scream at annual Saint Mary's Walk of Horror

WINONA, Minn. — This year’s Saint Mary’s University Walk of Horror is again guaranteed to give you goosebumps. New scares are planned around every corner.

The 16th annual hair-raising fundraiser for the SMU Cardinal fastpitch softball team will take place from 7 to 10 p.m. Oct. 26-27 and 30-31 in the SMU bluffs. Walkers are asked to meet on the lighted path between the SMU baseball and softball fields, where the haunted walk will begin.

Groups are then escorted through the dark bluffs surrounding the SMU campus for approximately 20 minutes.

The cost is $5 for adults, $4 for students with ID, and $4 for children 12 and younger. Tickets are available at the gate.

SMU head fastpitch softball coach Jen Miller said the event is fun for all ages. The scare level is toned down for younger children and turned up for groups bold enough to face their fears. Last year more than 1,100 brave souls took SMU’s Walk of Horror.

Proceeds from this event will be used for the softball team’s travel expenses.

Former Olympic soccer coach coaches Winona youth groups

WINONA, Minn. — Winona-area girls soccer players scored some personal coaching from Tony DiCicco, former head coach of the U.S. women’s national and Olympic soccer teams. DiCicco coached a portion of the SoccerPlus camp, held June 16-22, on the Saint Mary’s University campus.

The CEO and founder of SoccerPlus, DiCicco also brought in soccer coaches with international experience to work with approximately 20 residential campers. He also worked with a group of Winona Youth Soccer Association girls June 17 at the Saint Mary’s campus.

DiCicco is the former head coach of the U.S. women’s national and Olympic soccer teams and the head coach of the U.S. U20 women’s national team. In 2008, in his return to international soccer, he coached the U.S. to the FIFA U20 World Cup championship in Chile. He also led the full national team to the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup championship, the largest women’s sporting event in history. And in 1996, he coached the U.S. women’s Olympic team to the first-ever gold medal in women’s soccer.

DiCicco plans to return to Winona next year to continue training young Winona-area athletes.

SMU offers ‘Tri Swimming’ clinic March 5 – June 9

WINONA, Minn. — Saint Mary’s University is offering “Tri Swimming,” an individual open-water swim training clinic, March 5 through June 9. This clinic is for beginning or advanced swimmers who are looking for a swim clinic to complement their triathlon training goals.

Athletes must be able to swim one length of the pool without the assistance of a flotation device.

TriSwimming is geared toward bringing people together to train and learn proper swimming skills and techniques. Whether training for the next Trinona, or setting different goals, swimmers are welcome to join — or try out the clinic for one week for no cost.

The group meets three days a week, Mondays from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m., Wednesdays from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 to 9:15 a.m. The clinic will be held at the eight-lane Jules Gernes Pool at Saint Mary’s. The instructors are Jami Severson, a former competitive swimmer with open water swimming experience, and Mark Ross, a current SMU swim team member.

While the weather is cold, participants will swim in the pool to build confidence and endurance. As the weather gets warmer, the class will transition to Lake Goodview and Lake Winona for open water practice.

Saint Mary’s benefits planned to help wounded alumnus, veteran

WINONA, Minn. — Saint Mary’s University is planning two public benefits for alumnus Josh Misiewicz, a Marine veteran who was severely injured this past summer while serving in Afghanistan.

On Feb. 11, the Saint Mary’s men’s hockey team will host an Armed Forces Night in Misiewicz’s honor during their game against Gustavus Adolphus at 7:30 p.m. The Color Guard has been invited to render honors when the National Anthem is played, and all proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to Misiewicz, who played junior varsity hockey at Saint Mary’s from 2006-2008.

Misiewicz has also been named the recipient of the 12th annual Taylor Richmond Benefit Dance, planned for Saturday, March 24. The public will be invited to this formal dance, which features the Johnny Holm Band.

Marine Lance Corporal Misiewicz grew up in La Grange, Ill., where he was a well-known hockey star. He attended Saint Mary’s for two years before pursuing his passion to become a U.S. Marine.

In July, his life changed in a flash: a landmine exploded and he suffered the loss of both legs and two shattered eardrums. He recovered at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Maryland, where his positive attitude and enduring spirit served as an example to others.

Misiewicz received the Purple Heart medal this past fall.

Even though the federal government covers Misiewicz's medical expenses, the family is facing many other long-term costs including transportation, home improvements, and a hand-controlled vehicle.

SMU basketball team joins forces to fight spina bifida

WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary’s University men’s basketball team is joining with team alumnus Ryan Wockenfus ’11 in a fundraising effort to help fight spina bifida.

On May 19, Wockenfus, a current member of the SMU Admission staff in Winona, will be participating in the upcoming “Tough Mudder,” a hardcore, 10-12 mile obstacle course designed by British Special Forces to test athletes’ all-around strength, stamina, mental grit and camaraderie.

The grueling event will take place in Somerset, Wis., and Wockenfus — whose younger sister, Kaley, was born with spina bifida in 1991 — will be a part of “Team Spina Bifida.”

“This is our chance to support my younger sister, along with all other individuals and families who have been affected by spina bifida,” said Wockenfus, a four-year member of both the SMU men’s basketball and track and field teams.

While Wockenfus will be tackling the “Tough Mudder” — and its underground mud tunnels, fire, ice-water, 12-foot walls and 10,000 volts of electricity — the Cardinal men’s basketball team will be doing its part during their Feb. 4 game against Macalester, beginning at 3 p.m.

The Cardinals will be soliciting pledges based on the Cardinals’ performance against the Scots in the “hustle areas” — offensive rebounds, assists, steals and drawing offensive fouls. (For example, if you pledge 10 cents, and the Cardinals total 11 offensive rebounds, 12 assists and four steals, you would donate $2.70.)

The Cardinals’ support of Wockenfus and his cause is the latest in a long line of partnerships for the men’s basketball team. In 2009, SMU teamed up with the Jimmy V Foundation for cancer awareness; in 2010, they joined forces with SMU alum Suzanne Deranek ’83 to help her make her $2,500 goal to participate in the three-day cancer walk; and last year they kicked off the Relay For Life event held on the SMU campus.

The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference has selected Donny Nadeau to receive this year’s Mike Augustin Award.

The annual award — chosen by MIAC sports information directors — recognizes outstanding contributions to the conference’s athletic programs and student athletes.

Nadeau has served as sports information director at Saint Mary’s University since 1994. SMU athletic department colleagues and his SID peers lauded Nadeau for his energy, enthusiasm, creativity in writing, innovations in technology, and quality of work.

The award is named for the late Mike Augustin, a longtime sportswriter at the Pioneer Press who was a follower and advocate of the MIAC and Division III institutions, student-athletes and coaches.

This course is designed to complement the already-training tri-athlete’s workout, and also to encourage those who are intimidated by swimming, especially in open water. Saint Mary’s hockey team hits the nets with Big & Little Pals

WINONA, Minn. — Approximately 50 youth and Saint Mary’s University students involved with Big & Little Pals enjoyed an evening of hockey at SMU Friday, Feb. 18. The group teamed up with members of the SMU Men’s Hockey team for some off-the-ice hockey training. The Pals had dinner on campus before enjoying obstacle courses, stick handling and shooting pucks. The evening concluded with an SMU Men’s hockey game vs. Gustavus Adolphus. Big & Little Pals pairs SMU students with first- through fourth-graders from the Winona community for a year. The pairs meet once a week for a fun mentoring activity.

Nearly 300 Saint Mary’s students volunteer for Make a Difference Day

WINONA, Minn. — In recognition of national “Make a Difference Day,” approximately 285 Saint Mary’s University students volunteered their time Saturday, Oct. 23, throughout Winona and the surrounding area.

Volunteers assisted the Habitat Restore, Habitat for Humanity, the Winona Area Humane Society, Winona Health, the Minnesota Marine Art Museum, Grace Place, Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Winona ORC, and at Madison, Jefferson and Washington-Kosciusko Elementary Schools.

“Make a Difference Day” is the most encompassing national day of helping others, a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors. Created by USA WEEKEND magazine, this annual event takes place on the fourth Saturday of every October. SMU is proud to join the millions of people throughout the nation who participated.

Saint Mary’s Alumni also came together through the spirit of Saint Mary’s Lasallian mission of service to others and volunteered their time Saturday, Oct. 23, as part of the annual “Lasallian Day of Service.” Alumni helped out in the Twin Cities, Chicago and Winona, working with projects such as Feed My Starving Children, Project for Pride in Living and the San Miguel Schools in Chicago.

Saint Mary’s alum John McDonough, president of Blackhawks, receives award

WINONA, Minn. — Saint Mary’s alum John McDonough ’75, president of the National Hockey League’s Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks, shared his triumphant and inspiring story with his alma mater Thursday, Sept. 2.

McDonough served as the guest speaker during SMU’s annual convocation ceremony, where Brother William Mann presented him with a Presidential Award for Outstanding Merit.

The award was presented to McDonough for his exemplary leadership in the world of professional sports and his “heartfelt dedication” and devotion to Saint Mary’s.

During his visit, McDonough also spoke to business students and faculty about “The Chicago Blackhawks ‘One Goal’ Business Plan.” Additionally, he participated in a Q&A session for SMU administration, faculty, student leaders and Winona business leaders.

McDonough was named president of the Chicago Blackhawks in November of 2007. Under his guidance, in what Forbes Magazine has called the “The Greatest Sports-Business Turnaround Ever,” the Blackhawks moved quickly to revitalize the team’s profile and re-energize its fan base. Just over two and a half years after his arrival, the organization achieved its “One Goal” of a Stanley Cup title in 2010, the team’s first since 1961.

Under McDonough’s leadership, the Blackhawks became one of professional sports’ biggest success stories. As of June 6, 2010, the Blackhawks have entertained 102 consecutive capacity crowds at the United Center and have grown a season ticketholder base from 3,400 to over 14,000 in under a year.

Prior to joining the Blackhawks, McDonough served as president of the Chicago Cubs. During his tenure, the Cubs won the 2007 National League Central Division while setting an all-time franchise attendance record. As the Cubs chief, and in his previous role as senior vice president of marketing and broadcasting, he was widely viewed as a sports marketing and management innovator who played a major role in growing the Cubs’ fan base and attracting sponsorships for one of the most successful pro sports franchises in America.

Three Saint Mary’s athletes to be honored during Cardinal ‘M’ Club Weekend

WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary’s University Cardinal ‘M’ Club, in association with the Alumni Office, will induct three members into the SMU Sports Hall of Fame during Cardinal ‘M’ Club Weekend Sept. 10-12.



The Hall of Fame Class of 2010 — Teisha (Smith ’00) Devine (fastpitch softball), George Hoder ’67 (basketball) and John Tschida ’90 (Fastpitch Softball Coach) — will be honored during a ceremony Saturday evening, Sept. 11, in the SMU gymnasium.



Along with the induction of this year’s Hall of Fame class, SMU’s 2009-10 postseason award-winners, as well as last year’s outstanding male and female athletes, and outstanding scholar athletes, will also be recognized. The weekend festivities begin on Friday with a men’s hockey alumni game, continue Saturday morning with a golf outing at Cedar Valley Golf Course and conclude on Sunday with a picnic and various alumni games on the SMU campus.

Chicago Fastpitch Softball
Teisha (Smith ’00) Devine was a four-year letterwinner who was instrumental in guiding the Saint Mary’s University fastpitch softball team to its first-ever NCAA Division III National Championship in 2000. A three-time All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection, Smith led the Cardinals to three straight MIAC regular-season titles in 1997,1998 and 1999. She was named to the NFCA All-Region Team three times — a first-team selection in 1998 and a second-team pick in 1999 and 2000. A two-time team captain and member of the NCAA Regional and National All-Tournament teams, she ranks first in school history in earned-run-average (1.04), while ranking second in career wins (58), third in complete games (35) and shutouts (18) and fifth in strikeouts (215). She also holds the single-season school records for complete games (15) and shutouts (8) and is second in wins (21), appearances (28) and games started (24). During the Cardinals’ run to the 2000 national championship, she went 21-2 and won her last 18 starts — including a perfect 7-0 mark during SMU’s seven post-season games.

A four-year letterwinner, George Hoder ’67 is one of just 24 players in the program’s history to eclipse the 1,000-point barrier, having netted 1,260 points during his career. Hoder also ranked 10th in program history in free throws attempted (408) and rebounds (536). Hoder averaged a career-best 14.4 ppg during his junior season, when he tossed in 124 field goals on 297 attempts, while also shooting 64 percent from the free throw line (111-for-171).

JOHN TSCHIDA ’90
Saint Paul, Minn. Fastpitch Softball Coach
John Tschida ’90 spent six years as the Cardinals’ head fastpitch coach, guiding SMU to post-season appearances in 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000. His Cardinals won back-to-back-to-back Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference crowns in 1997, 1998 and 1999, and his 2000 SMU team became the first in school history to capture the NCAA Division III national title. Following the 2000 season, Tschida accepted the head coaching position at the University of St. Thomas, where he coached the Tommies to back-to-back national championships in 2004 and 2005. With his UST national crown in 2004, Tschida became the first fastpitch coach to win NCAA titles at two different schools. A 1990 graduate of SMU — where he was a four-year letterwinner for the Cardinal baseball team — Tschida is the winningest Division III coach, active or retired, boasting a 573-98 record and an .854 winning percentage. Tschida has been named MIAC Coach of the Year in eight of his 15 years at the helm at SMU and UST. His teams have been nationally ranked each year, and in the last 13 seasons have posted a 273-13 record in conference regular-season play.
